The capital of the los Vélez region, Vélez Rubio is a small town situated in the north of the province of Almería. High in the Sierra de María-Los Vélez National Park, it is a town steeped in history, which goes back as far as Palaeolithic and Neolithic times.
It has many outstanding pieces of architecture and places of interest for visitors and inhabitants alike. The historic centre was a walled community. A walk through the town is a joy, with a surprise to discover at every turn: The Parish Church de la Encarnación, was built in the place of the Parish Church de San Pedro when it was destroyed in 1751 by an earthquake; Casa del Indiano; the cloister in the Palacio de las Catequistas; to name but a view of the gems to be discovered within the town.
Just 4 km outside the town you will find Cueva de los Letreros. Where you can see fresh looking red and brown drawings dating back to 4,000 B.C. If you have ever visited the area of Almería, you will be familiar with the Indalo man, a good luck charm adopted by many locals. It is in these caves that you can discover its origin and perhaps benefit from its lucky charms yourself.
On a more up to date note, the town is a working town, which has a wide variety of restaurants, shops, bars and other stores. With its history, much of its income is derived from tourism, however it has not been spoiled as a result. Market day on Saturday is a must, stalls fill the four main streets and have a wide variety of things you want, need and would just like to have.
