Turre is ostensibly a small village, which is growing rapidly. Situated to the north of the Sierra Cabrera on the river Aguas. It has one main street and the usual meandering side streets you expect in small Spanish villages. With many shops, restaurants and Internet cafes, it has much to offer to local residents and with its rich history visitors can explore the fascinating history.
Having played a notable role in the area’s history the Turreros are rightly proud of their heritage and have invested their time in the preservation of such buildings as the Parish Church de la Purísima Concepción, constructed between 1861 and 1887 and other significant monuments.
The Mozarabic departure in the 12th century and the Christian conquest at the end of the 15th century shaped what is Turre today. Many of the current residents are descendents from local areas. Forced into Turre or ‘asked’ to return to Africa, this is when the Mudejar Arab quarter was formed. In 1501 the Mudejaras in Turre converted to Christianity, those that didn’t convert were forced into slavery after an attempted escape to Africa in 1502.
