With a rich history dating back to prehistoric times and the roman occupation there is a diverse selection of archaeological remains to be discovered. Tíjola la Vieja, which was destroyed in 1570 by Don Juan of Austria (half brother of Philip II) during the Moorish uprising is the oldest part of the town some of which remains today.
Tíjola is situated next to the Almanzora river and plains having been moved there during the 16th century. The Parish Church of Santa María, built around 1660 to 1665 is one of the focal points of the town. Built with only one nave, it is decorated with some of the finest Mudejar woodwork with many of the side chapels unusually having domed ceiling, all added in the 18th Century.
