A beautiful village, Tahal is situated in the Campo de Tabernas, in the eastern part of the Sierra de los Filabres. Nestling in a wide valley, with steep streets dominated by white washed houses beneath ceramic tiles. The keep of the Castillo, built for the protection of the local population, still remains.
After the Christian conquest at the end of the 15th century, the Catholic Monarchs gave the estates to Enrique Enríquez and was name Estado de Tahal by visiting Clerics. The locals primarily earned their living from livestock. Traces of a Neolithic past have been found with engravings in Peña de los Chaparrales, Peña de don Diego and Cerro del Mortero. Still to be seen are the schematic human figures and horse shoes.
One of the most important buildings in the village is the Parish Church de la Encarnación, built in the 16th century. It is difficult to substantiate which is the original part of the building due to the various renovation during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, however it is well worth a look.
People today still make their living from agriculture and livestock and has approximately 2,500 head of sheep and 800 goats. Together with looms for rugs and linen manufacturing, olive oil presses and honey making the locals are kept very busy.

Pimentón o caldo colorao (fish in spicy sauce). Garlic soup. Wheat stew. Gurullos (bread fried in lard with garlic, spicy sausage and bacon). Stew with black pudding.
