Famous the world over, Tabernas is set in the middle of the desert between the Sierra de Alhamilla and de Sierra de Filabres. The scenery, whether you have been to the area or not will be familiar to you, if only because of the many spaghetti westerns produced here: The Magnificent Seven, The Good the Bad and the Ugly and a Fistful of dollars to name but a few. Along with the films, come the international film stars, including: Sean Connery, Brigitte Bardot, Yul Brynner, Harrison Ford and of course the king of Spaghetti westerns, Clint Eastwood.
However, don’t be fooled into thinking cinema is its only attraction, thanks to three thousand hours of sunlight each year, this area has the largest installation for solar energy in Europe and its work contributes to the progression of solar energy and to the advancement of the reduction of global warming as a result.
Part of the area belongs to the Sierra de Alhamilla Natural Beauty Spot, a place of great scenic ecological interest. Its history can be traced back to prehistoric times and remains of a Neolithic settlement can still be seen today. A turbulent part of its history lies in the 1500’s when it laid siege to the Berber Pirates. In 1566, prior to the Moorish uprising of 1568, the pirates anchored up and arrived in the early hours on September 24, where they plundered houses and took Catholic prisoners.
