Serón sits on the right bank of the Almanzora river, surrounded by the Sierra de Filabres mountains. Its unique position in the valley ensures rich fertile land for agriculture. A prosperous village with beautiful white washed buildings cascading down the mountainside, surrounded by vines and orange trees.
The area has been settled since prehistoric times although, as with much of Spain, the Catholic, Christian and Moor rebellions have left its mark. Serón became famous for the defeat suffered by the army of Don Juan of Austria, when he was nearly killed in one of the most violent revolts in the conflict. All the inhabitants, with the exception of children under 12 years old were slaughtered on “Slaughter Hill” (Cuesta de la Matanza), concluding the defeat.
Serón is a perfect base to investigate the mountains and enjoy orange scented walks in some of the most tranquil and inspiring scenery in the area. Don’t forget to try their specially cured ham, a method unique to this area. There is even a festival to celebrate the ham.

Gurullos con liebre (Hare with bread fried in lard, garlic, bacon and other ingredients). Cured meats. Gachas colorás (flour, tomato, garlic, fish, peppers and oil). Cherries and grapes in liquor.
