Once an iron mining community, Pulpí is now primarily dependent on agriculture making this a tight knit community which celebrates the land and isn’t dependant on tourism.
Its history goes back to prehistoric times as Neolithic and Argar remains have been found. During the Al-Andalus period it was a primary route from Lorca to Vera, this fact alone reduced Pulpí to a bit of a no-mans-land between the kingdom of Murcia and Granada which made it a difficult area for locals to settle there. The Christian conquest in 1488 saved the area but not without difficulty. Berber pirates frequently raided the land and it wasn’t until the 1960’s, after intensive farming was introduced, that the village began to prosper.
Today, some of its prosperity is evident in the church of San Miguel in the main Plaza Mayor. It is well worth a visit, with fine examples of cimbres (clouds) vaulting, a traditional method of building in this area due to lack of wood.
