Olula del Río nestles in the Almanzora Valley in the heart of the marble Zone of Almería. Up until the XIX century the village primarily derived its living from agriculture. However, once the marble quarries in the area had been tapped into and marble excavation mechanised in the 1900’s the village achieved a certain economic prosperity. This prosperity is clearly visible today in the well-maintained streets and houses in the village.
The first settlements in the area can be traced back as far as Neolithic and Copper ages. Conquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1488 its ownership passed to various nobles including Miguel Serrano, noted for his involvement in the pacification of the Moors during the rebellion of 1568 – 1579. Repopulated by the Christians at the end of the war, there are still some wonderful examples of Arab architecture through the village.
