What is an N.I.E. Number ?
Numero de Identidad de Extranjero Foreigner Identity Number
An N.I.E. Number is allocated by the Spanish Civil Government to
Non-Spanish nationals. It is a unique number which does not change from
the time of issue.
· It is similar to National Insurance Number issued the United Kingdom
An N.I.E. number is required by the Spanish Authorities in many situations and listed below are a few examples:
o Payment of Taxes
o Registration of Property
o Registration of a vehicle
o Registration to the Spanish Healthcare system
o Registration onto the Electoral Roll
o Registration to work, either on a contract of employment or as self-employed person.
Therefore, it is essential that you apply for an N.I.E. number even if
you are not living in Spain, as it will be required by Spanish
Authorities at some time and could result in delays in paperwork if you
do not have one.
What do I need to get an N.I.E. Number ?
You will need your current passport and a completed Application form,
together with a declaration in Spanish, stating why you are applying
for N.I.E. number.
Where do I present these documents?
You can take the information to Extranjeros Office in Almeria and
present the documents yourself or you can use a company who will
present the documentation and collect the Certificate on your behalf ,
for which you will pay a fee.
What does an N.I.E. Number look like ?
Once your application has been presented and processed, in about three
weeks you will collect a Certificate issued by the Ministerio Del
Interior, confirming your name and personal details and
allocating you a N.I.E., which at the current time
begins with an X, then seven digits followed by a letter, for example,
X -1234567-Y. The numbers and end letter will be exclusive to you.
Do I get my N.I.E. number in a card format ?
Your N.I.E. number is only issued in a paper format. The original
copy must be kept by you, only give a photocopy if requested . If
you susequently decide to apply for a Residencia card as you live in
Spain for more than six continuous months of the year, the same number
will appear on the card, but a N.I.E. Certificate and a Residencia card
are different processes, involve diferent criteria and are not to be
confused as the same.
