This award-winning village is situated in the Sierra Alhamilla and is a
delightful little place. The economy is primarily based on
agriculture, especially to vines and their fruit. There is a
fabulous hotel here with three restaurants serving lovely food
including traditional tapas. Its name is of Hispanic-Roman origin and the village used to be called Lucainena de las Siete Torres (Lucainena of the Seven Towers). The towers referred to are no longer to be seen, however, it is thought they were on the castle that acted as the main defence for the area. This was a strategic place for defending a main route from the mountains to the coast.
Its population has been somewhat unstable over the years. Records
show that it was deserted in 1570 after the war of the Alpujarras when
the last 436 Moors left. It was then repopulated years later by
19 settlers who had been ordered to do so by Felipe II. With the
movement of people throughout the Moorish rebellion and the
repopulation by Christians the number of inhabitants grew to a massive 2,455. This increase was mostly due to the discovery of lead and iron seams, which were heavily mined and brought a well-earned
prosperity to the area.
