Situated between the mountain ranges of Bédar, Los Filabres, Cabrera and the coast, Los Gallardos is ideally positioned for easy access from the airport and within easy reach of the coast. Perfectly placed as a base for investigating the beautiful mountains and the unique coastline.
Until 1924, Los Gallardos was ostensibly a mining village since the discovery of the lead and iron seams in the Sierra de Almagrera in XIX century. The men generally worked in the mines, whilst other residents including the children, worked the land. Fragments of overhead cable from el Pinar to Garrucha and the remains of the railway bridge, which joined Los Gallardos to Bédar and Garrucha, can still be seen today. The mines closed in 1970 and apart from farming the economy of the area is fed by the service industry and of course tourism.
Walking to the old industrial sites is a popular day excursion, as is horse trekking and hiking along the Río de Aguas to the canyons of Río Jauto and Río de Aguas. With beautiful scenery and interesting landmarks along the way such as the old 16th century flourmill, and the archaeological site in Cadima with Ibero-Romano ruins makes for an interesting break. Added to which, a short journey in the car gets to man local beaches some of which have been awarded blue flag status, gives you the best of both worlds.
