This beautiful town nestling at the peak of the Pico Del Almirez is surrounded by some of the most fertile land in the area. The area is well known for the cultivation of grapes and is famous for producing Andalusia’s first Cava.
The extraordinary buildings in this village give some clues to its dramatic history, the Moorish revolt in 1500 being the most infamous, when the majority of the people of the village were burned to death whilst hiding in the mosque from the Christians. Several of the Moorish leaders, including the King of the Moors, Fernando de Valor who was assassinated in the village by his own nephew. Later all Moors where required to convert to Christianity or leave the country with many of them returning to the African continent.
Láujar has plenty of accommodation ranging from hostals to hotels and it is a perfect place to explore the richness and “Spanishness” of the area. Many of the buildings, including the Town Hall are well worth a look. The Parish Church of la Encarnación built between 1672-1686 in the form of a cross with vaulting and dome over the transept is a true sight to behold.
