Healthcare cover in Spain as an EEC Member state National
Does Spain have a National Healthcare Service free to all EEC Member State Nationals?
Yes, but only if you are eligible.
Oh, you say, there is always a catch in Spain. Isn t it part of the
EEC? Can t I just go to a GP or hospital and get treated the same as,
for example, in the United Kingdom (UK)?
Yes, but as non Spanish national, you have to have documentation
from your country of origin/residence before your visit or move to
Spain, as proof that your have paid into that EEC Member State s
healthcare system and can utilise the Spanish Healthcare Service under
the reciprocal agreement of Member States.
Alright, , you may ask yourself, what paperwork do I need then ?
If you are just Visiting Spain
You will need to obtain a E111 depending on the EEC Member State this
maybe in the form of a card or as in UK new style paper format which
will be valid from 1/1/2005 until 31/12/2005, when the card form
is scheduled to be issued.
If you require emergency treatment during your stay in Spain, you are
eligible to use the Spanish Healthcare Service upon production of your
E111, and can be treated for the duration of your illness. This
does not substitute travel health insurance which should be taken out
whenever you travel.
If you are Moving to Spain
You will need to obtain from the relevant Government Department
responsible within the EEC Member State you were resident before your
move to Spain a Form E106 or Form E121, both these forms confirm your
eligibility to become affiliated to the Spanish Healthcare Service.
What Form do I need to get then ?
· E106
o If you are not of Statutory Retirement age for the
EEC Member State you were resident in prior to your move to Spain, but
have paid the relevant contributions into the Healthcare System.
· E121
o If you are of Statutory Retirement age for the EEC
Member State you were resident in prior to your move to Spain.
Now I have my Form, what do I do ?
In order to be Affiliated into the Spanish Healthcare Service, you need
to register your Form E106 or E121 with the local Healthcare Authority
in the Province you are resident in, for example, in this area, the
Healthcare Authority offices are based in Huercal Overa.
In addition to the Form E106 or E121 you will need to take the following documentation:
· E106
o Copy of your Passport, NIE Certificate and Certificate of Empadronamiento
· E121
o Copy of your Passport, copy of Residencia and Certificate of Empadronamiento
When you have registered with your local Health Authority you will be
allocated a Social Security Number, which will be unique to you
and will enable you to register with your local doctor and use local
Healthcare services.
What if I can t get a Form E106 or E121 ?
Well, there are two options:
· You will have to take Private Medical Insurance
until you reach Statutory Retirement age for the EEC Member State you
were resident in prior to your move to Spain, then apply for a
Form E121
orYou will have to affiliate to the Spanish
Healthcare System by paying Social Security payments via a Contract of
Employment or as a Self Employed person
What if I go to another EEC Memberstate on holiday ?
Once you are affliated to the Spanish Healthcare Service you will need
to apply for E111 from your Local Spanish Health Authority, to be
eligible for emergency treatment while not in Spain.
