Set in the unique scenery of the Sierra de Gádor mountain range, surrounded by orchards of citrus fruit trees and an expansive desert, Gádor, with its luminous streets of white houses and a wonderful Parish Church which can be seen from any point on the plain is a gem.
This settlement dates back to Neolithic times. Prehistoric, Roman and Roman Christian remains have been found in the area, the most notable being Los Millares. As with many Spanish towns and villages, Gádor didn’t escape the Christian conquest or the Moorish uprising and was populated, deserted and repopulated up till 1570 when its population began a more settled existence. In the 19th century their economy was based on agriculture, the production of oil and silk and later the Ohanes grape and then oranges. During the 20th century sulphur mines were established and have now been substituted by cement works.
