Perched on the left bank of the Almanzora river, amongst the Macael marble quarries upon which its economy is based. Little is known about the history of this little town, except that during the Al-Andalus period it belonged to the State of Tahal and after the Christian conquests in 1492 it was given to don Alonso Fernández de Córdoba, master of Alcaudete and Montemayor.
Its primary activities have always been agriculture (corn, vines, olives) and of course the mining of the famous Macael marble. The first modern factory for the refinement of this marble was built in 1837 and is still in operation today although 9 other factories have been added to the landscape.
With a microclimate, temperatures average around 12 degrees in the winter and 25 degrees and more in the summer, making this an ideal location for walks, horse riding and cycling.
