Set in the Sierra Nevada Natural Park, bestowed with a wealth of flora,
fauna, botanical and anthropological interests and scenery to gasp at,
Fiñana is a special place. The town is a mix of Moorish and
Christian architecture, its flat roofs, Mudejar church and castle
remains, a warren of streets and steps with a treasure at every turn.
Its name seems to have been derived as a result of the town’s
speciality, silk handkerchiefs. Made on local looms, which were
called ‘Alfiñames’, these little silk treasures were sold throughout
the whole of Spain.
The Castle, built during the 10th century, acted as the main defence
barrier. Just a short walk from the castle up the staggered,
winding streets you will come across the Mezquita built between the
12th and 13th centuries, one of but a few Islamic buildings with its
chapel, still whole and preserved for us to enjoy. Declared a
National Monument in 1983, the Mezquita is well worth a visit.

Kid in garlic. Tabirnas colorás (potatoes, red peppers, onion, garlic). Turnip stew. Pig’s liver with onions. Cured meats.
