Cuevas del Almanzora lies in the valley of the river of the same name in the northeast of the province of Almería, 6km north of Vera. It sits in a landscape of contrasts: semi desert and the green irrigated areas of the plain. Of the many man made caves, which gave it its name, the most notable is the Terrera del Calguerín.
It has long been inhabited, by the Phoenicians through to the Moors. Its population received a boost after the discovery of silver in the Sierra Almagrera in the early 19th century, the resulting prosperity funding the building of grand houses, avenues and churches.
Today tourism is developing rapidly and the construction of the reservoir has increased its agricultural output.
