The village of Chirivel is situated in the green, mountainous area of the Sierra de María Natural Park in the north of the province of Almería, west of Vélez Rubio. It developed in the 18th century, though its history reaches back much further. It is known particularly for the archaeological site at El Villar, a Roman settlement which has yielded important finds.
Chirivel is a good base from which to explore the surrounding countryside.
