Carboneras, on the coast east of Almería, is situated in a bay surrounded by semi-desert at the northeast edge of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park. Originally a small fishing village, it is now both a thriving industrial area –a power station and cement works contribute to its economy- and a lively centre fro holidaymaking.
Despite its industrial aspect, Carboneras has much to offer the tourist. It boasts 17 km of beautiful sandy beaches in sheltered coves, including El Lancón, annually awarded the EC Blue Flag, and Los Muertos, a nudist beach that can be reached after a 10 minute walk. Views from its surrounding steep cliffs are breathtaking. It is well provided with hotels, restaurants, bars and tourist amenities. A weekly market, a good place to buy fresh fish, is held Thursdays in the town centre.
