The industrial port of Adra is situated on the flat coastal plain in the southwest of the province of Almería. This modern town’s economy is based on fishing and, more importantly, on agriculture, dealing with produce from the large surrounding area of greenhouse farming.
Its history, however, is more romantic, reaching back to the 8th century BC. Phoenicians who exported iron from inland mines; to the Moors who developed irrigation systems for cultivating mulberry trees in connection with the silk industry; to the growing of sugar cane in the 17th century. In the 19th century it was again concerned with metal production (smelting lead and refining silver), and boasted a big industrial complex.
