The village of Abla, in the Sierra Nevada Natural Park, lies in the west of the province of Almería, between the Sierra de Baza and the Sierra Nevada. Its flat-roofed white terraced houses, of Moorish origin, are built on the side of the foothills, facing the plain. Originally a 5th century BC Hispanic settlement, it became important to the Romans as a staying post on the road linking Guadix with Urci, near Almería. The Moors left their mark in the layout of the village centre and in the Christian imitation of Arabic building style in the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Anunciación.
